Dreaded Light

Author and filmmaker Mark MacNicol got in touch with The Slaughtered Bird this week with news of his latest project, Dreaded Light, and I must say I was pretty intrigued the second I pressed play on the film’s introductory video - the link to which is HERE.

Not only is Mark’s story a fascinating one, it’s also plainly evident how passionate he is about Dreaded Light - a tale close to his heart… and now you can get involved.

“When I was a teenager my mother was told by a woman she had never met that she was a medium and had a message from her eldest child. My mum told her that wasn’t possible as I was her eldest. The medium replied ‘No Angela is your eldest.’

“I have no idea how she knew this but she was right. The year before I was born my mum had a baby girl she called Angela. It was a traumatic birth for both of them. My mum almost died and while in a coma she had two blood transfusions. When my mum finally woke up (ten days after she went into hospital) her daughter had already been buried by my father and grandparents in a family plot.

“Among other things the medium told my mum that day, she said that Angela wanted her to pass a message on to Mark (yes the medium also knew my name). ‘Tell him his big sister is always with him and she’s his guardian angel.’

“Through my life I’ve always found this to be a positive thing. A source of comfort. I like the idea of having a big sister guardian angel. Some people may say the medium could have spoken to people who knew my mum in advance, etc, but I always believed her to be genuine, as did my mum. I hoped that Angela’s spirit carried on.

“That said, I had never really investigated Spiritualism in any great detail. Until I decided to do this film. I’ve now attended Spiritualist church services and also had private readings done with mediums. I’ve met lots of really interesting people and I thank them for sharing their stories with me.

“Some of our investors believe the spirit continues after physical death while others are open or even closed minded to the possibility. I want to stress from the outset that you need not have any particular view in order to join us as an investor (or to watch the film as an audience member).

“This film, although inspired by my own experience and subsequent research, is a fictional exploration of several themes including Spiritualism. It is not a documentary.”
