The Device

What if the rumors and urban legends are real… that aliens walk among us, abducting people for unthinkable experiments? Sisters Abby and Rebecca are about to discover the horrifying truth when they find a harmless looking object in the woods near their family’s cabin. A small black sphere is the key to a shocking mystery that will change the course of human destiny. ‘The Device’ has plans for us, and this world is no longer ours.
As the film opens Abby and her soon to be husband, Calvin are waiting for Abby’s sister Rebecca. The three are headed to their family owned cabin to scatter their mother’s ashes. Right from the start you can feel the tension that is present between the two sisters. Even Calvin feels a bit uneasy at first. A lot of this is due to Rebecca being kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend from the same cabin years before, when she was found she was pregnant with a child she then had aborted. No one seems to want to talk about what happened that day but everyone except Rebecca blames her boyfriend. Rebecca’s story is a bit more out of this world.
Not long after the three arrive and pay their respects to their mom they find what looks like a crash site, an airplane or something else? No one knows, but when they find a mysterious black ball at the site strange things begin happening.
‘The Device’ doesn’t contain any fancy special effects or lots of action, instead it is more like ‘The Invoking’ which was Director/Co-Writer Jeremy Berg and Co-Writer/producer John Portanova’s last feature film. Jeremy Berg and John Portanova impress once again with great story telling and very impressive direction. The film is story and character driven. Right from the start you are sucked in to the sisters lives. You immediately become attached to them and have feelings for them. You also feel the atmosphere the film provides right from the start.
I purposely avoided going into major plot details here so not to ruin the fun and surprises that await but I can tell you that this is a smart, clever and engaging film that brings back the best of the Sci-Fi genre. This is old school science fiction that will haunt, frighten and amaze you long after it is over.
Production wise the film is flawless, the cinematography and sound are both fantastic and the use of locations are perfect. And finally the acting, Angela DiMarco, David S. Hogan, Kate Alden are all terrific in leading roles. I hope to see each of them again very soon.
A thinking man’s Sci-Fi that is full of mystery, suspense, tension and scares, you are hooked right from the start and you are taken on this terrifying journey with Abby and Rebecca, secrets with be revealed and as the mystery begins to come clear you will be both shocked and frightened out of your mind. ‘The Device’ is a spine tingling Sci-Fi thriller that gets in your head and under your skin. A must see so be sure to check it out.
